A. Automatic Focusing
When cutting different materials, the focus of the laser beam is required to fall at different locations in the cross-section of the workpiece. Therefore, it is necessary to adjust the position of the focal point (focus). Early laser cutting machine, generally using manual focusing method; nowadays, many manufacturers of machines have achieved automatic focusing. Some people may say that it is good to change the height of the cutting head, the cutting head is raised, the focus position is high, the cutting head is lowered, the focus position is lower. It is not that simple.

In fact, during the cutting process, the distance between the nozzle and the workpiece (nozzle height) is about 0.5 to 1.5mm, which may be regarded as a fixed value, that is, the nozzle height remains unchanged, so it cannot be focused by raising or lowering the cutting head (otherwise the cutting process cannot be completed).
The focal length of the focusing mirror is not changeable, so you can't expect to focus by changing the focal length either. If you change the position of the focusing mirror, you can change the position of the focus: if the focusing mirror goes down, the focus goes down, if the focusing mirror goes up, the focus goes up. --This is indeed one way of focusing. Automatic focus can be achieved by using a motor to drive the focus lens up and down.

Another method of auto-focusing is to place a variable curvature mirror (or adjustable mirror) before the beam enters the focusing mirror, and change the curvature of the mirror to change the divergence angle of the reflected beam, thus changing the focus position. As shown in the figure below.

With the auto-focus function, the processing efficiency of laser cutting machine can be significantly improved: the piercing time of thick plate is drastically reduced; the machine can automatically adjust the focus to the most suitable position quickly when processing different materials and different thicknesses of workpieces.

II. Bridge position (micro connection)

When laser cutting process is performed, the sheet is held by a serrated support bar. The part being cut down, if it is not small enough to fall through the gap of the support bar; and if it is not large enough to be held by the support bar; it may lose its balance and buckle. The cutting head moving at high speed may collide with it and stop the machine in a minor way or damage the cutting head in a major way.

This can be avoided by utilizing a bridge position (micro connection) cutting process. When programming laser cutting of graphics, the closed contour is intentionally disconnected in several places, so that after the cut is completed, the part is stuck to the surrounding material and does not fall off, these disconnections are bridge positions. Also known as a breakpoint, or microjoint (this name comes from a loose translation of MicroJoint). The break distance, about 0.2 to 1mm, is inversely proportional to the thickness of the sheet. Based on different perspectives, there are these different names: based on the profile, disconnected, so called breakpoint; based on the part, adhered to the parent material, so called bridge position or microjoint
The bridge bits connect the part to the surrounding material. The sophisticated programming software can automatically add the right number of bridge bits according to the length of the contour. It can also distinguish between the inner and outer contours and decide whether to add bridge bits so that the inner contours (scrap) without bridge bits fall off, while the outer contours (parts) with bridge bits are stuck to the parent material and do not fall off, thus eliminating the work of sorting.
